Mould itself to the shape of a warm body

What makes a mattress good is its ability to give you a comfortable good nights sleep. There is a wide variety of mattresses available in the market and choosing the right one seems very difficult to do. Important factors to consider are warranty, size, cost, reputation of the mattress maker, type, and firmness. Your mattress should be firm enough to properly support your weight and keep your spine aligned. Different people of different body types have different mattresses that they find most comfortable sleeping on. Here are some ideas on how to select a comfortable bed mattress:

1. Firm Mattress. It comes with no extra padding and has a flat top. Its firmness ranges from firm to medium-firm and it is recommended for people with chronic back pains.

2. Cushion Firm Mattress. It has a slight cushion at the top and is medium-firm. It is an inch thicker than a firm mattress.

3. Plush Mattress. It is the softest type of mattress without the addition of pillowtop padding. It has an extra layer of foam on top of the coils for extra comfort and plush.

4. Ultra Plush Mattress. It is thicker than a plush mattress with more layers of foam over the coils to make it plushier. It includes additional pillowtop padding.

5. Memory (Tempur-Pedic) Foam. It is made from polyurethane and can mould itself to the shape of a warm body. It reacts to climate. Cool temperatures make it firmer while warm temperatures make it softer. It is denser and provides more support than a standard mattress.

6. Pillowtop Mattress. It has an extra layer of padding on the top of the mattress to provide additional comfort. With a pillowtop mattress, there is no need for a pillow to cushion your head. It requires a deeper fitting sheet because it of its irregular shape and thickness.

7. Air Mattress. It is composed of air chambers instead of metal and springs. Its remote control can let you select the level of firmness that you want with just a touch of a button. The remote relays a message to the beds pump for adjustment purposes.

8. Organic Mattress. It is made from all-natural organic materials and is best for people prone to allergies. It claims to be comfortable, durable, and nontoxic.

9. Latex Mattress. It provides ample support and is hypo-allergenic because bacteria, mildew, and mold cannot survive in latex foam. It is more resistant to dust mites and bacteria than an ordinary mattress. This is a great option for people that react to so many allergens.

10. Futon. It is a cheap alternative for a mattress bed as it can fold up to serve as a couch that goes to say that it is space saving. It can come in a variety of materials: cotton, foam, latex, polyester, innersprings/coils.

11. Waterbed. It has water chambers inside the foam and mattress casing. It is recommended for people with allergies as it cannot contain mites and pollens. It is very comfortable and like the memory mattress, it can adjust to temperature.

12. Orthopedic Mattress. Ensures a good nights sleep by having the ability to mould into the contours of the body. It can fill the gap under your lower back while supporting the rest of the body without deflecting. In more ways, it is similar to a memory mattress.

The mould is actually the cause

Blossom end rot is such a disappointing situation to have with your tomatoes because you don’t even know your tomatoes have it until they are at the picking stage. The damage has occurred weeks before and there is little you can do about it in the final stage.

What is so disappointing about this is that you do not find out the state of your tomatoes until they have started to color, just as you are getting excited about being able to pick your lovely home grown tomatoes.

The actual fact of blossom end rot is that it is a disease that starts at the point where the blossom has dropped off the fruit. Blossom end rot does occur in other fruit types as well, such as watermelon and capsicums.

The appearance of blossom end rot.

What often happens is that where the damaged skin is, there is a secondary injection mold which may grow and those who do not know the difference, think that the mould is actually the cause of the problem, but not so. This disease gives the appearance at the flower end of the fruit, of a shrunken brownish green discoloration of the fruit. In the early stages it just shows as a discoloration at the end, but as the fruit ripens it shrinks and looks quite awful.

What causes blossom end rot?

Tomato plants do suffer from many parasitic diseases, but in this case the disease is a physiological one, meaning that one or more of the environmental factors regarding the plant are causing the inadequate function of the plant.

The cause of this disease is the supply of calcium to the developing fruit not being met by the plant itself. Sometimes it could be lack of calcium in the soil but that is not necessarily the case. Calcium is a very important component to healthy plant and fruit growth. In fact it is essential to the forming and holding together of plant cells. What happens is that in an area where cell growth is very rapid, as in the forming of fruit, there is an inadequate supply of calcium because of the distance of the source, thereby causing the death of cells and the breakdown of plant tissues.

When flowers are forming into fruit, this point is the furthest away from the calcium supply and therefore the last area to be serviced, meaning that the cell growth at that point cannot be maintained as it needs to be.

Although we have discussed the lack of calcium, it needs to be understood that it is not the lack of calcium as such. In other words, if you sprinkled calcium powder around the plant, that would not fix the problem.

It is the absorption of calcium throughout the plant and into the cells that prevents, or stops further blossom end rot. If you have this problem then look at your soil and your watering as they are common problems with calcium uptake. One cause is the one you most likely won’t be able to do anything about if you are growing tomatoes outside, and that is hot windy weather that dries the leaves and slows down the travel of calcium to the fruit formation area.

This is what I believe was the cause of the blossom end rot that I saw on my tomatoes because at the time that the fruit about 2 foot up the plant were forming we had three weeks of extremely windy weather, almost gale force. It was the tomatoes in that section that were affected with the blossom end rot. The first ripening tomatoes were alright and the ones further up the plant were alright so I have to come to the conclusion it was the terrible weather that cause my problem. The answer would obviously be to protect the plant from hot dry winds.

After the mould is removed

Mould spores are tiny structures produced

Mould spores are tiny structures produced by moulds for reproduction purposes. They are so small that we can hardly see some of them even when magnified 400 times. One cubic meter of outdoor air may contain
as many as 100,000 spores. The volume of air we inspire at rest per minute is estimated at 10 litres. Therefore, in an hour we inhale close to 600,000 spores. The air in working environments including mouldy buildings may contain up to 1,000,000,000 spores per cubic meter of air.

In indoor environments moulds grow on moist surfaces such as the drywall, wallpaper, carpet, baseboards and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems (HVACs). As these moulds grow, a stage is reached when they produce spores. The spores become airborne after drying out or disturbed.

Why are these spores so dangerous to our health?
About 20% of the population is allergic to mould spores. Apart from being allergenic, spores of some mould species such as Stachybotrys contain toxic compounds called mycotoxins. Symptoms associated with mould spores may include allergy, headache and fatigue, running nose, sneezing, coughing, pneumonia and Asthma among others. Young children, the elderly and people undergoing medical treatment are particularly susceptible to mould spores.

How can we control indoor mould spores?
It is extremely difficult to get rid of spores completely. We can, however, reduce their numbers by controlling mould growth in our houses or offices. Mould growth is associated with moisture problem as a result of flooding, leaks in roofs or plumbing and condensation in case of poor ventilation or inadequate insulation. The key to controlling mould growth is keeping our houses or offices dry by maintaining low relative humidity (below 70%) thus eliminating or slowing the growth of most mould species. Any water leakage should be repaired immediately and the water dried out within 48 hours. Constant monitoring for mould growth in the kitchen, bathrooms, window frames, carpets and baseboards is recommended. The earlier the mould is discovered the cheaper and easier it is to get rid of the problem.

What should you do if you notice mould growing in your house or office?
Do not panic! Seek professional advice. Not all moulds are dangerous to health, but no mould should be allowed to grow in our dwellings. Also the health effects of indoor moulds depend on the amount of mould one has been exposed to, length of time of exposure, the types of moulds present and individuals resistance. Therefore, presence of mould does not necessarily mean the occupants have been exposed.

Which are the most dangerous moulds?
People have come to believe that black moulds are the most dangerous.
The truth is, colour does not determine whether a mould is of health concern or not. To know whether a mould is dangerous or not requires the mould to be identified by a qualified mycologist.
